27K V.S.2 Fiddle-base Restoration...

CHECK THIS BEAUTY, A SINGER 27 V.S.2 FIDDLEBASE FROM 1891...BIT OF A STORY FOR THIS ONE...LOVELY LADY ON EBAY CALLED RACHAEL, (WHO HAD PURCHASED THIS PURELY FOR DECORATIVE PURPOSES) HAD THIS FOR SALE IN A TREADLE BASE AS COLLECTION ONLY...TOO FAR AWAY FOR ME TO GO SO I SENT HER AN EMAIL ASKING IF SHE WOULD WOULD BE PREPARED TO SEPARATE IT AND SEND ME JUST THE MACHINE...NOT FOR ONE SECOND DID I THINK SHE'D SAY YES, BUT SAY YES SHE DID AND THEN PROCEEDED TO PACK IT UP WONDERFULLY AND IT ARRIVED SAFE AND SOUND (SHE WAS ALSO KIND ENOUGH TO ACCEPT MY LOWER OFFER THAN THE ASKING PRICE...SO THANKYOU RACHAEL!!!)...HERE IT IS UPON ARRIVAL...

BUT THIS IS WHERE IT GETS HORRIBLY INTERESTING LOL...THE PICTURES WERE NOT OVERLY DETAILED OR CLOSE-UP BUT I DIDNT THINK THAT WOULD BE AN ISSUE AS I COULD CLEARLY SEE THAT THIS RARE MACHINE HAD UN-COMMONLY FULL DECALS SO PRESUMED I WOULD BE GETTING AN ALL-ROUND BLISTERINGLY SPECIAL MACHINE...AS I UN-PACKED IT I SAW THE UNDERSIDE AND WAS LIKE, WOOOAH!!! WHAT THE HELL!!! IT WAS NOT ONLY RUSTED BUT ALSO KIND OF CORRODED WITH THIS WEIRD ROCK-HARD CRUST...NERVOUSLY I THEN TOOK THE FACE-PLATE OFF AND WAS SLAPPED ROUND THE FACE BY ONE OF THE UGLIEST SCENES I'VE YET ENCOUNTERED WITH A SEWING MACHINE...I'VE NEVER!!!! SEEN SUCH A CONTRAST BEFORE BETWEEN THE EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR...I STILL DONT REALLY UNDERSTAND HOW THIS HAS HAPPENED, A TOTAL CONTRADICTION. OK, OBVIOUSLY THE DISTANT OWNER LUBRICATED THIS WITH THE WRONG STUFF...HENCE THE BROWN GUNK...BUT THE CORROSION/CRUST WAS SYNONYMOUS WITH SOME KIND OF DAMP STORAGE CONDITIONS OR SIMILAR BUT THAT WOULD USUALLY RESULT IN EXTERIOR DAMAGE TOO...I DUNNO...WHATEVER!

THERE WAS NOW A MASSIVE UNDERTAKING AHEAD...SO I GOT STUCK STRAIGHT IN AND FOR THE NEXT TEN HOURS THAT DAY I STRIPPED IT ALL AND THEN FILED/SCRAPED/SANDED AND WIRE-WOOLED....DURING....

AND AFTER...OILED, SMOOTH AND 'CRUST-FREE' LOL...ALL AREAS OF THE INTERNAL MECHANISMS WERE COVERED IN HARD TACKY BROWN STUFF....ITS NEVER USUALLY NECESSARY TO CLEAN THE UNDERSIDE MUCH OR THE INSIDES AT ALL BUT THIS TIME I TRIED TO REACH INTO EVERY AREA AS FAR AS I COULD REGARDLESS OF WHETHER OR NOT ANY HUMAN BEING WOULD EVER LAY EYES ON IT AGAIN...I JUST COULDNT BEAR KNOWING IT WAS ALL THERE LOL...I USED WOOD SCRAPERS, WARDING FILES, A TOOTHBRUSH ETC ETC...FINALLY STEEL STARTED TO PEER THROUGH ON THE UNDERSIDE RODS AND LEVERS AND MY WORK SURFACE WAS COVERED IN A THICK LAYER OF RUST AND GENERAL GUNK...

ANOTHER THING...I'VE NEVER!!!! YET HAD TO USE MULL-GRIPS ON A SEWING MACHINE (PLIERS - NEARLY EVERY TIME, MULL-GRIPS - NEVER)......I'VE SERVICED/RESTORED ABOUT 100 BY NOW IN EVERY CONDITION, OF EVERY AGE AND EVERY MODEL BUT I NEEDED GRIPS TWICE ON THIS ONE...FIRST TO GET THE STITCH-LENGTH KNOB MOVING (I ACTUALLY HAD TO USE SO MUCH FORCE I HURT MY HAND) AND THEN ALSO ON THE PRESSER FOOT ADJUSTMENT KNOB...I ALSO HAD TO USE A LENGTH OF OAK AND A HAMMER TO KNOCK OUT THE REAR NEEDLE PLATE AND GET THE BALANCE WHEEL OFF, WHICH TOOK ABOUT 30 FIRM HITS....INCREDIBLE. EVERYTHING WAS LITERALLY GLUED ON!! BUT SHE SLOWLY STARTED TAKING SHAPE...AND STARTED TO GLOW....

ALL THE PARTS I'D STRIPPED OFF FROM THE HEAD, THREAD TENSION ASSEMBLY AND BOBBIN MECHANISM WERE SOAKED IN ALCOHOL AND THEN ATTACKED WITH COTTON BUDS...THIS IS USUALLY ENOUGH TO BRING UP A SHINE BUT IN THIS INSTANCE EVEN WHEN THE GREASE WAS OFF THE METAL UNDERNEATH HAD BEEN AFFECTED AND WAS DULL OR CORRODED SO NEARLY EVERY PART WAS THEN SUBMITTED TO FURTHER CLEANING WITH METAL POLISH, WHITE VINEGAR, CILIT BANG, WASHING UP LIQUID AND ALSO MY POLISHING MACHINE....I FINISHED IT ALL OFF ON DAY TWO HAVING SPENT A TOTAL OF ABOUT 17 HOURS ON HER AND SHE'S CURRENTLY SITTING UP ON TWO OAK KNIFE SCALES WHILE THE FRESH OIL DRAINS OUT OF HER....

THIS IS A TREADLE VERSION (I ALSO HAVE ONE OF THESE WHICH HAS BEEN CONVERTED TO ELECTRIC...PICS COMING SOON) AND OF COURSE I DONT HAVE THE TREADLE, WHICH IS STILL IN RACHAELS HOUSE LOL SO AS YET I'VE NOT BEEN ABLE TO EVEN SEE IF SHE SEWS...NOT THAT I CARE...SHE'S A PICTURE OF BEAUTY AND EXTREMELY RARE IN THIS STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL CONDITION AND I'LL BE FOREVER HAPPY IF I ONLY GET TO EVER LOOK AT HER...I DO HAVE FOUR TREADLE TABLES HERE AND WILL TRY HER OUT FOR FIT ON THEM BUT IF SHES NOT COMPATIBLE THEN I PLAN TO BUILD A CUSTOM BASE FOR HER OUT OF SOME LOVELY OAK BURR OR SOME SUCH...WILL DO AN UPDATE WHEN DONE...

HOPE YOU ENJOYED....REGARDS!
